Company History

Municipal Code Corporation (Municode) was founded in 1951 as a one man operation, for the sole purpose of codifying municipal laws and ordinances, and publishing this material in loose leaf form. At that time, and until 1963, the publication phase was subcontracted, while the editorial processes were performed in-house. In 1961, Municode acquired its own premises. Two years later a complete printing plant was installed so that all stages of the operation would be under the direct management of Municode, eliminating the need for and dependency on a subcontracted printing service. The company moved to its present location in 1970.

Another milestone in Municode's development occurred in 1973, when the typesetting operation was first computerized. Since then, there have been five different typesetting systems and virtually every department has increased its productivity by using technology.

In fact, Municode was the second direct connection to the internet (outside academia) in Leon County. In 1995, the company revised its definition of publishing from "delivering words as ink on paper" to "delivering words in any medium demanded by clients."

In 1999, the company installed its first Print on Demand (POD) system. POD allows clients and subscribers to order as few as one copy of a code or supplement, eliminating the expense of prior printing and physical storage.

It has always been our goal to integrate technology into our workflow and workforce for the benefit of our customers. For instance, we have an email address for submission of ordinances, customer service email and an FTP site for posting of ordinances that cannot be emailed.

Our electronic focus has added many online improvements. We can post and print color graphics and complex tables, and offer print, save and email functionality within the search engine for our online codes. We offer an accelerated schedule for electronic updates, with printed supplements on the more traditional – or even a reduced – schedule. Our customers can receive a PDF of the supplement for internal printing.

In 2009, we added more than 500 customers from an acquisition of Lexis Nexis accounts. Integrating that many new clients required two years of preparation to ensure we had the necessary equipment, training and personnel in place to convert them to our system. A customer service team was created and assigned to our editorial staff so that corrections, status requests and other editorial needs can be addressed immediately. We extended our customer service hours from 8:00am EST to 5:00pm PST. Our staff is closer to the customer and available to assist with any need more now than ever before.

Municode is committed to leading the industry, staying abreast of technology and focusing on the needs of our local government customers so that everyone - our clients, our employees, and our stockholders - may benefit.
