Why Codify?
Codification and Recodification
Codification is the process of consolidating your general and permanent legislation, then organizing it into a code of ordinances. The legislation is organized by topic (animals, business, etc.) or by department/title (Administration and Personnel, Revenue and Finance, etc.).
If you already have an existing code, then recodification is the more ideal approach. Recodification begins with the updating of your existing code with all of your subsequent general and permanent legislation. Next, our legal research includes a review for inconsistencies, duplications, proper grammar, conflicts in the code and additional legislation by one of our attorneys. We also review and compare your Code with current state law. We then implement these suggestions as approved and republish the code in print and online.
Legal Research
One of our staff attorneys performs a legal review of the existing Code and subsequent ordinances of a general and permanent nature against state statutes and court decisions. Municode then provides a legal manuscript consisting of the recommendations in strike through and underline along with comments backing up the recommendations. A resume of our staff is available upon request.
Conference
The attorney that reviewed your legislation will either travel to you to conduct the legal conference or set up a teleconference to discuss the recommendations contained within the legal manuscript.
MCC adds:
- A listing of all sections within a chapter at the front of each chapter.
- Catch lines preceding each section which describes the subject of the section
- History notes, where possible, at the end of each section giving the ordinance number from which the section is derived
- State law references, which cite the applicable state statute
- Complete subject matter index
- Page formatting, numbering, graphics and tables
